Phil’s 24 Hour Row

This page shows Phil Craze’s progress as he attempted to beat the indoor rowing record – it all started at 9am Thursday 12th May, and at 08:35 Friday 13th May he beat the age group record (307683m). At the end of the 24 hours, the overall record (313112m) had been beaten by 136m!

A graph of Phil's progress

This is a 24 hour row in aid of the Stroke Association and the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Scotland. In the process, Phil is attempting to break the age group world record, which has been held for over ten years.

Both these organisations are important to me and if you’d like to support them too, then please visit my Stroke Association fundraising page or my MS Society fundraising page. Thank you in advance for your support.

Note from David T:
To answer all the questions about reading the graph: The pale blue line is how far Phil has done so far, and the red line is how far would be covered if he was matching the record pace (both are attached to the left-hand scale). The dark line is attached to the right-hand scale, and shows how far Phil is ahead of the record pace. I hope that helps make some sense of it!

Support team – any chance of an update? What’s the atmosphere like?

  7. Jim T

At around half way in your row from Edinburgh to Lytham, you could choose to take the A69 for Newcastle.
But that road has a lot of steep hills on it!
I would head for the coast.

  8. Strachs

Phil, it sounds like you’re going to have a ball this evening/tonight, and all you have to do is go back and forth, back and forth…..

  9. Lou Rowllings

Amazing effort Phil – I’m still not sure I understand the graph, but from reading all the other messages sounds like you are just eating up the metres! Hope the crowds are keeping your spirits high. See you soon ! Lou x

Atmosphere is good, a tad chilly though…

Phil is going strong and appreciates all the messages of support – even though he’s not that talkative! Keep them coming.

Tommy – under no circumstances is cricket going on, that will send him to sleep!

    You’re doing great.
    We’re all rooting for you!

Guys – I thought Phil looked a bit nervous when I saw him earlier. Is he more relaxed now that there are fewer people around?

Other than that – tell him all the Linklater family is well impressed. Keep up the good work and I’ll see him soon.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

  20. Derek H

I’ve now given up and written off this evening as I can’t keep away from this graph and the comments.

Nearly halfway Phil, keep it going.

  21. Fatty P

Well impressed. I’m even considering a maths word problem about a crazy man who rows non-stop for 24 hours to give to my class as a weekend homework!!! But they’d never believe it… Keep it up and remember when Strachs and I were phoning the operator for Rowardennan taxis, ABC Rowardennan etc that you insisted walking along that path all the way round!!! I know you’re mentally tough – good luck!

  22. Phil Shimmin

    Halfway – come on fella!

  23. Michael

Row row row your boat gently up the corridor.
Go Phil go, this is just incredible. You’re not a man you’re a machine.
Very best wishes from Michael, Bex, Freyja and Elsa we are extremely extremely proud of you!
    Good luck.

  24. Carl Worrall

Phil has just requested a printout of all the comments to be read to him – keep them coming, your support is driving him on!

  25. The Chowdhrys

Hi Phil! One for the support team. A Blonde joke, altered slightly…..Two Triathletes were driving along a country lane when they saw a triathlete in the middle of a field in a rowing boat. One turns to the other and says, it’s triathletes like that that give us a bad name! His friend replied, yes, if I only had my wetsuit I’d swim out there and sink him!! WELL DONE PHIL! AMAZING EFFORT!

  26. John Smith

Keep it going Phil, you’re an inspiration and doing fantastically well.

  27. Duncan Williams

Saw you at 1pm today and were looking strong. Good luck through the night and i’ll see you break that record tomorrow morning. You’re an inspiration!

  28. Barney

Phil, I’ve made the coffee for the 5am shift. I just stuck half a bag of espresso in though so it might kill you rather than revive you!

  29. Tommy Fallon

Just checked Phil’s Just Giving pages and including Gift Aid, he’s already raised over £4K for his two charities which is fantastic, plus there are a couple of buckets in the work still to be counted.
If anyone wants to donate to these fantastic causes, here are the links:

  32. Steph D

Well done Phil your doing great! Couldn’t believe you were still smiling at everyone passing when they were leaving for the day.

I have to admit checking the graph is a little addictive.

    Best wishes and good luck!

  33. Gary R

    Phil,
I honestly cannot stress enough how genuinely impressive your attempt is. The level of effort and dedication required to get to where you are is incredible and I wish you well for the rest of the night.
I will be in at the gym for around 5 in the morning. If there is anything which you need brought in there is a 24 hour tesco just down the road from me and would be happy to stop off and bring in any supplies.
This time tomorrow you will be sitting with friends and family looking back at your incredibile achievement.
    Good Luck
    Gary

  34. A rowing convert

    great effort buddy!!

  37. Dot Hay

Well done, you’ve passed the halfway mark on both counts – keep it going. You’re doing great. I know what others mean, it’s addictive watching that graph. Half expected to see you on the Scottish News with all this attention!
    Dot

  38. Ann & Lawrence

Fantastic effort. Half way through, still going strong and no doubt smiling as well!

Good luck for the next 12hours

  39. Claire A

Not sure that Phil will be “sitting” come this time tomorrow. That long on a rowing machine has got to cause at least a little numbness in the backside! :)

Well done, Phil. Hope the night goes by quickly for you.

  40. Morag Bruce

Phil, you’re doing amazingly well. Everyone here is so impressed!

  41. Ray

At the stage now where I can’t really comprehend what you’re doing! It’s epic – well done, keep up the good work! Will check your progress in the morning. Good night! x

  42. Alison and Laurence

Robbie Rotten says keep going Sportacus!

Well done and good luck for the next 12 hours.

  43. Lois and Graham

Keep going Phil, you are doing really well. 40 minutes of ViPR tonight killed me……!

Kim just txt for an update (this website very addictive) and says ‘GO PHIL you are fantastic’.

Good luck to Catriona too for the 4am stint, that’s devotion for you. A crazy lady for a crazy man….perfect! x

  44. Strachs

Before I call it a night, I thought I’d write just one more comment. Thinking back at all the sport/activities we’ve done together, it’s always been yourself leading the way, dragging my sorry ass, or just simply leaving me behind. As Fatty says you’ve got the mental strength, you’ve done the training and this time there is no one to hold you back. Keep it going – just a wee story from another great endurance athlete…

The previous “hour” record had been held for 9 years by the Italian Francesco Moser, but Obree’s rival Chris Boardman announced plans to tackle the hour, yet Graeme had decided to try it first, just a week before Boardman’s attempt. Graeme and his few assistants flew to Hamar in Norway, and he just failed in his first attempt to break the record. Everyone assumed that was that, including the officials who were there to measure the attempt.

Graeme had the track booked for 24 hours, and said he would go again in the morning. This time round, he used his own home-built bike (dubbed “Old Faithful”) and smashed the record.

  45. Keith Stewart

Andrea has not even watched Coronation Street as she is too busy watching your graph.

I have blisters on my hand after only 1hr on the support rower.

    Keep it going. Remember……No Pain!!

    Stick in

  46. Phil Shimmin

    Phil

We’ve had a job fail in the batch. As you’re there anyway, could you pop up in your next break and take a wee look? They do say a change is as good as a rest.

Esther’s been watching your progress all day and I can’t stop either. I posted the picture I took on the way out of the door on FaceBook (the one of you grimacing, not the one of you having your brow mopped by minions) and I’ve also posted a link to this page. Looking great chap.

  47. Graeme Murray

Superb progress Phil, been watching all night. Is now a bad time to tell you your project is over budget??

  48. Dave M and Michelle

I don’t think my blistering 18.9 seconds at lunch time impressed the ladies as much as I’d hoped; even though I seemed to work up more of a sweat than the big guy with the flash gear and big smile on the next machine!

Michelle and me are glued to the website and we’re sure you’ll dig deep and keep on through the night.

Note to Support Team – Must stop Tommy Fallon’s DVD collection getting through!

    Good luck

  49. Courtney

Heeyy uncle Phile, past half way, your doimg great, keep it up! your some person like, wouldn’t be me, i’dd be nakered by the first 2hours miin. hope you do well! Good Luckk!!
